"Initiation into their own individuality comes for most women through their body."
Marion Woodman
After several years practicing yoga and giving yoga lessons to hundreds of women, I can certainly say that I meet more women in yoga classes than men -- and still, far too often a general hatha yoga class program focuses on male anatomy and physique.
Also, I find women have very specific needs and ideas for their own health and well-being in a class.
Most women want to focus on their pelvic region, abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks. Our female anatomy, coupled with the effects of childbearing on pelvic muscle tone and fat accumulation, makes this area of concern for most most of us.
My Shakti Yoga classes focus on these specifically female needs while also providing a strong emphasis on general yoga principles like
internal strengthening,
whole body integration (the practice of connecting each body part to and through the centre),
balance poses,
bending poses,
flexibility enhancers (side muscles, back- and forward-bending, and hip mobility poses),
inverted poses,
and relaxation poses.
